Patriot Front was formed in August 2017 by former members of Vanguard America mainly those from Texas although it quickly spread to other states, quickly becoming one of currently most visible ultra-rightist groups in the USA: although the actual membership might be rather small, they seem to be rather mobile, disseminating propaganda and participating in the ultra-rightist events in all states except Alaska and Hawaii, as well as abroad [1, 2].

Flag

The current flag of Patriot Front was introduced in late 2018 [3, 4]. The field is parted per hoist chevron four times, with a large blue portion at the hoist and four smaller portions alternating in white and red towards the fly, the white ones being the narrowest; on blue field, the emblem is depicted in white, consisting of a fasces between two circular segments, all within a ring of thirteen stars which point away from the center. The whole design denotes the group's ideology of "American Fascism", as they openly call it. The flag was regularly used in 2019, in the USA [5] as well as abroad [2], which continued through 2020 [6, 7, 8] and 2021 [9, 10] and into 2022 [11, 12]. The flag design also appears on the patches which members wear on their caps and jackets [13].

The original flag of Patriot Front, adopted in 2017 [14], was created as a modification of the flag of its predecessor, Vanguard America-Texas. It kept the field composed of thirteen red and white horizontal stripes, as well as the blue disc bearing a large Black Sun emblem in white, which was charged with a blue star in its center. However, instead of the narrow edge of blue disc separating the emblem from the field, the disc was completely enclosed within the Black Sun here, the whole being surrounded by a red circular border which was merged into a single shape with the red stripes; the shape of Black Sun was also modified [14, 15, 16]. The use of flag-shaped patches is also verified [14]. The original flag of Vanguard America-Texas seems to also have been used for a while, at least until the new flags were distributed [16].

In 2018, the original flag was replaced by a new one, on which the emblem with fasces and ring of stars was depicted in white on blue field. The flag use was recorded on very few occasions in late 2018 [17, 18, 19], suggesting that it was created in mid-2018. By November same year, it was replaced by the current design [3].

In late 2017 and early 2018, the images of a would-be flag appeared online several times which combined the original red-white striped field and the current emblem in white placed on a blue disc with inner white and outer red borders, the latter being conjoined with the red stripes in the same way as in the original design, but was visibly narrower here [20]. There is no evidence that such flags were ever used, so this was most likely just a proposal, created during the process of adopting a new visual identity by the group.
